SABCON represents the commercial interests of the Mian Sabahuddin family as passed down by his father Mian Amiruddin, the first Muslim Lord Mayor of Lahore in 1946, and before that by Mian Karim Baksh who relocated from Kashmir in c. 1840 and made Haveli Barood Khana his residence. This historical home was acquired by Mian Karim Baksh from the commanding general of Lahore during the rule of Ranjit Singh, and through this his progeny is also known as the ‘Barood Khana Family’.
Mian Karim Baksh went on to become the municipal commissioner of Lahore in the late 1800s and was the pre-eminent contractor for the British Raj. He built a number of Lahore’s most recognisable landmarks including the Railway station, Town Hall and Government College. He also setup and funded a platform for the liberation and welfare of Muslims called ‘Anjuman Himayat-e-Islam’ which established several schools, colleges, medical institutions, and orphanages for the benefit of Muslims throughout the 1900s. These were later donated to the Government of Pakistan.
The family went on to play a pivotal role in the creation of Pakistan. Quaid-i-Azam first raised a voice for a separate land for the Muslims of India under the banner of Anjuman Himayat-i-Islam. The Anjuman, and Mian Amiruddin in his capacity as a key member of the Muslim League, also organised the Lahore Resolution of 1940 and hosted Quaid-i-Azam’s first procession in Lahore.
Mian Sabahuddin’s estate and philanthropic interests are represented by his grandson Ali Shah, who organised them within the Sabcon holding company over the last decade.
Whilst the family has diversified its interests in the last century and across seven generations into a wide variety of areas such as real estate, mining, textiles, and agriculture; the current generation has set out to modernize this through Sabcon, currently a leading privately-owned development firm focused on real estate development and management with interests in agriculture, mining and investing in innovative businesses that create a positive impact to the city.
